Fixed Ladder Design Requirements

Different situations require different safety options for ladders. Here are some of the basics:

  • Ladder needs safety cage if it is longer than 20′ (Cal/OSHA Standards)
  • Ladder needs intermediate rest platform if the overall height is greater than 30′.
  • Ladder needs walk through handrails when exiting straight onto roof or mezanine.
  • Handrails must extend at least 36″ above the platform to meet OSHA standards.

Other design options are required in certain situations. If you think your existing ladders are unsafe, please call us and we will be happy to answer your design questions.

Do you have an existing ladder that requires a safety cage?

Safety Cages are required on all fixed ladders over 20 feet. Please call us today and we can work with you to design and fabricate a ladder safety cage for your existing ladder.

Designing your Ladder Safety Cage

First, we will need your ladder dimensions. We need to know:

  • Ladder Width
  • Ladder Side rail Width
  • Side Rail Material (Flat Bar, Channel, or I Beam)
  • Finished Floor to Ceiling or top of Ladder
  • Ladder Material (Steel or Aluminum)
  • Ladder Wall Bracket Locations
  • Pictures showing ladder

We will need to work together over the phone an through email.

How it Works

Our ladder cages ship in 36″,48″, or 60″ lengths. That is the distance from the bottom hoop to the top hoop (end to end). We will ship the necessary amount of units to best fit your ladder. Sometimes you will need to intermix lengths of cages to accomodate your ladder. Remember that the cage must start between 7 and 8 feet from the floor.

Cage Installation

Once you receive the cage you will need to clamp the 4′ cage section to the ladder side rail. Once clamped, use the pilot holes to drill through the ladder side rail and bolt the cage section to the ladder and proceed with the next section.

Butt the next section up to the adjacent section and clamp to the ladder side rails. Proceed with drilling and bolting. Tie the two adjacent cage sections together with our aluminum splice bracket.
